Personal watercraft (PWC) are incredibly fun, but they can also come with safety risks. After all, they are powerful machines traveling at a high speed on the water, which can contain hazards from other boaters to floating debris. Minimize the risks by following the below safety tips.

Dress for Safety

Wear a Coast Guard-approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD) at all times when operating or riding on a personal watercraft. It doesn't matter how strong of a swimmer you are – there is always a chance that you get injured in an accident and it impedes your ability to stay afloat. Plus, it sets a good example for any kids or teens when the adults are always wearing their life vests.

Drive Sober

Never operate a personal watercraft under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This may seem obvious, but don't forget to check with your doctor about prescription medications. Sometimes, they can interfere with a person's ability to safely operate a vehicle.

Look Up the Forecast

Always check the weather conditions before going out, and be aware of any changes while you are on the water. Heavy rains and wind can create an unsafe environment, especially for smaller vessels like PWC.

 Know Your PWC Limits

PWCs can become unstable if overloaded, increasing the risk of an accident. Be sure you know your personal watercraft's weight limitations and always stay within that restriction.
