Shopping for a boat is an exciting time, especially if it’s your very first one! But it can also seem overwhelming if you’re not sure what you’re looking for. The market is laden with new boats of all sizes and shapes by hundreds of different manufacturers, so how do you narrow down your search?

What Size Boat Do You Need?

Your first order of business is to think about the size of the boat you need. This will depend on a few different factors: namely, how many people you intend to take with you at any one time and where you plan to do much of your boating.

A small boat with a flat bottom is ideal for one or two people to use for fishing on a calm inland waterway, while a big V-hull boat with lots of seating, storage space, and an enclosed cabin will be more practical for bigger parties and open-ocean or Great Lake sojourns. You don’t want to take a little boat onto choppy waters as it might capsize; by the same turn, you shouldn’t take a massive boat into a narrow channel or small lake as it might run aground or be too impractical to use.

If you like fishing, you'll want to consider features like rod holders, livewells, in-deck storage compartments, and maybe a roof of some kind to provide you shelter from the hot sun while your line is in the water.
